Transfers.

Out

Mathieu Bersion 1 yr loan to Auxerre. I'd like to see him back.
Thomas Hitzlsperger. Free transfer to Stutgart. We'll miss that shot, but not much else.
Stefan Moore. QPR, no fee disclosed.
Stefan Postma. 1 year loan to Wolves. I liked him, he always delivered, and his distribution was good (nb, pun). If he plays regularly and gets confident, he could be worth having back.
Nolberto Solano. £1.5 million back to Newcastle from whence he came, and for the same money. Its what he wanted, they say.
Darius Vassell £2million to Man City. Good luck to him - I think he needed a change of scenery.

In

Eirik Bakke (loan to January) - One of DO'Ls Leeds super-team, but surprisingly still only 27, he's been injured a lot and hasn't played in ages. Supposedly fit now.
Milan Baros (£6.5 million from Liverpool, 4 yr deal). The negociations took forever, but he's here in the end. Hope he lives up to the promise. He's 23.
Patrik Berger (free from Portsmouth, 2 yr deal). I've always thought he's good, but he's surely on the downward slope at 31.
Wilfred Bouma (£3.5 million from PSV). The story is he's a versatile 27 year old defender / midfielder.
Aaron Hughes (£1.5 million from Newcastle,  3 yr deal). The 25 year old Northern Ireland Captain should be a useful defensive option.
James Milner (1 yr loan from Newcastle). Very promising 19 year old midfielder came as part of the Nobby out deal.
Kevin Philips (£1million, 2 yr contract from Southampton). The 31 year old striker will add to our depth up front.
Stuart Taylor (no fee disclosed, 4yr deal from Arsenal). A second choice goalie to replace the Postman

Fixtures/Stats/ Match Reviews (KO 3pm except where stated)

Sat 13 Aug Aston Villa 2 - 2 Bolton  Kevin Philips opened his account after just  4 minutes, but this and a goal from  Steven  Davies were not enough to beat this  pushy Bolton  side.

Sat 20 Manchester United 1 - 0 Aston Villa 12:45  Villa worked hard to contain  United, and nearly got away with ,  but for a late goal from the Horse Faced on himself.

Tue 23 Aug Portsmouth 1 - 1 Aston Villa 19:45. Solano was sent off after only 10 minutes for violent conduct, but a Pompey own goal shortly afterwards gave us the lead. Pompey equalised through LuaLua just before the break. Villa need to see off teams like this if they have real ambition to end up in the top half.

Sat 27 Aug Aston Villa 1 - 0 Blackburn Rovers A 10th minute goal for debutent Milan Baros sealed the points for Villa, but really we only just squeaked this one, must try harder.

Mon 12 Sep West Ham 4 - 0 Aston Villa 20:00. A really dreadful performance, Villa sat back like champions and gave West Ham loads of rooom to play. West Ham worked hard throughout the game, in the way that Villa never do.

Sat 17 Sep Aston Villa 1 - 1 Tottenham 17:15. A better performance, James Milners 4th minute goal not enough though. Both teams had many more chances but Spurs levelled it late on.

Sat 24 Sep Chelsea 2 - 1 Aston Villa 1. Luke Moore became the first premiership player to score against the mighty Chelski, to put Villa into a surprise first half lead. It only lasted few minues though, and Chelski got a second half winner. Creditable performance by our boys though.

Sun 2 Oct Aston Villa 2 - 3  Middlesbrough 14:00 Villa were 0-1, pulled back to 1-1 at half time, but quickly slumped to 1 - 3 with Boateng getting on the score sheet. O'Learly had been moaning earlier in the week about the sale of George, even though it was 3 years ago. A Stephen Davies consolation went in during injury time, but this was really a dreadful Villa Performance.

Sun 16 Oct Birmingham City 0 - 1 Aston Villa 12:00 Kevin Philips giving Villa a first win over Brum since they got back into the top flight 3 seasons ago and Villa showed some enthusiasm today. Only one shot on target though, this doesn't look likely to herald the start of the 'push'. We are still without the injured Baros.

Sat 22 Oct Aston Villa - Wigan Athletic. 33 games since Villa recorded back to back premiership wins, and didn't manage it against newly promoted (and everyone expected no-hopers) Wigan who are confounding everyone by moving into the top four. An Aaron Hughes own goal started the misery and Villa were miserable once again. There are strong stories in the air of a takeover at Villa, with the ailing Mr Ellis finally looking like he might release the club. Maybe that's what's causing the miserable black cloud we are in this season.

Mon 31 Oct Manchester City 3 - 1 Aston Villa 20:00. Two goals from Darius Vassell set City on the way. Ridgewell of all people got one back but Andy Cole finnished us off on 83. Villa were poor today.

Sat 5 Nov Aston Villa 0 - 2 Liverpool 12:45. In fairness Villa had a decent share of possession today, but lacked many decisive moves to make it count.

Sat 19 Nov Sunderland 1 - 3 Aston Villa. Goals from Philips, Barry and Baros finally gave Villa a win, but Sunderland are rooted to the bottom of the table, so not much room for claims of an improvement.

Sat 26 Nov Aston Villa 1 - 0 Charlton Athletic. Villa's first back to back premiership wins for over a year, oh dear. A solitary goal from the excellent young midfielder Steven Davies nicked this one for us.

Sat 3 Dec Newcastle United 1 - 1 Aston Villa.  Would've been a decent result if everyone wasn't so fed up after the 3-0 defeat by Doncaster (carling cup) midweek. McCann the scorer for us, and while we struggled at times,  we could have won it if Barry hadn't  skyed his last minute penalty.

Sat 10 Dec Bolton 1 - 1 Aston Villa. Villa went out 4-5-1 against high flying Bolton, just Baros up front. It was a tight but entertaining game in which Bolton took the lead finally on 83 through the ever unpopular Diouf. O'Leary then brought Angel on who scored almost immediately (88) to level matters.

Sat 17 Dec Aston Villa 0 - 2 Manchester United 12:45. Villa played 4-5-1 again, so D'OL obviously didn't rate our chances. After the game he said "They have great players and we don't" as his reason for us losing. The manager is supposed to motivate the team, no? Its time he left.

Mon 26 Dec Aston Villa 4 - 0 Everton 17:15. A somewhat fortunate first goal at the tail end of the first half saw the ball come of  Baros' arm before he neatly chipped it past the keeper. But the goal stood and set up the best Villa win in a long while. Goals from Delaney (only his second?), substitute Angel and a second from Baros completed the job. The game as whole was a scrappy affair and we were fortunate to see this scoreline. Villa have 20 points from 18 and are 14th in the table, so there's still plenty to do if this season is to be anything more than mediocre.

Wed 28 Dec Fulham 3 - 3 Aston Villa 19:45. Another humdinger, and one in which Villa went behind and equalised three times - and there were many more chances on top. The scorers Luke Moore (who once again played most of the game, being subbed by JPA late on) and two from Liam Ridgewell - yes, you read correctly. Villa played 5-3-2 but it wasn't wing backs, it was just five at the back to try and keep it tight (still not that effective though, eh?). Stories continue to abound that Doug will finally seel up in the coming week or two.

Sat 31 Dec Aston Villa 0 - 0 Arsenal 12:45. Happy to report a good Villa performance with everyone working fairly hard and making the better scoring chances against an Arsenal side who are admittedly inconsistent this season. Baros missed our best chance, seeming to look for someone to pass to when the shot was clearly his, and then knocking it high over the bar with just the keeper to beat. In the face of various injuries, Villa were Sorensen, Hughes, Delaney , Ridgewell
Barry, Bakke, McCann, Davis, Milner, Baros, Moore (Angel).

Mon 2 Jan West Brom 1 - 2 Aston Villa 12:00. Villa finally putting a bit of a run together with this useful away win. Olof was back, and we even played 3 up front later in the second half - that's more like it. Steven Davis opened the scoring right after half time, following Villa's sterling but goalless first half. Our old friend Steve Watson pulled on back before conceding a penalty that Milan easily converted. The Baggies pushed us quite hard at the end, but we held on for a handy three points, finally bringing us in shouting distance of the top half of the table.

Sat 14 Jan Aston Villa 1 - 2 West Ham 15:00. Villa took a first half lead through Lee Hendrie's opportunist tap-on and we had high expectations in the second specially since they embarrassed us in the reverse fixture earlier this term. But it wasn't to be as West Ham put in a strong second half performance and took all the points. They've been playing well this season, but we really ought to be winning games like this.

Sat 21 Jan Tottenham 0 - 0 Aston Villa 15:00. Shots on target nil, goals nil, sums up Villa's afternoon. We weren't likely to win this, but at least we held 4th placed Spurs to the draw (Villa are 15th). Bad news that Gareth was sent off for a second yellow just before the end.

Wed 1 Feb Aston Villa 1 - 1 Chelsea 19:45 Chelsea took an early lead through Robben, but Villa were lively and pushed Chelski hard for most of the game and had a few good chances. How we failed to get a penalty for Terry's huge hand ball will never be known. 15 mins to go and DO'L took off Baros and Philips and brought on Moore and Angel. Wow, we have four strikers! Happily Luke bundles one in and we took the point - no less than deserved.

Sat 4 Feb Middlesbrough 0 - 4 Aston Villa.  Magnificent performance  against and admittedly dodgy Villasborough side.  Two nil at half  time thanks to goals from Luke and super Kev, progressing to four with Luke completing his first senior hat trick  in the second half. Boro offered little  in a game that Villa dominated. Villa are up to 13th, but whilst there  have been few losses recently so many draws means our progress up the table has been slow.

Sat 11 Feb Villa 1 - 2 Newcastle. After last week we hoped for so much more. Villa lacked penetration with Milner and Davies both out. The barcodes scored after just 80 secs but we Luke Moore continued his fine scoring run with an equaliser on 17. Newcastle took the lead again on the half hour, and that was the end of the socring. Villa missed a chance to take at least the point with Baros missing a penalty after being brought down himself.

Sat 25 Feb Charlton 0 - 0 Villa. Villa extended their away game unbeaten run to 8 as both sides stuck doggedly to the task of not conceding.

Sat 4 Mar Villa 1 - 0 Portsmouth. A fairly scrappy first half in which Baros relieved us by getting a goal. Villa had been worried about finding 4 fit defenders, but the surprise return of Wilfred Bouma after months out rescued the day. We were much better in the second half and battered the Holte End goal most of the way, tragically failing to raise the score and keepin us nervous to the last. It was like John Gregory days all over again.
